Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, will travel to southern Italy on September 8, 2026, to preside over a solemn eucharistic celebration at a basilica sanctuary dedicated to Mary in the Diocese of Tursi-Lagonegro, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem announced. The event marks a formal liturgical engagement by the patriarch outside his home jurisdiction in the Middle East.
Pizzaballa has held the position of Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem since 2021, overseeing the Catholic faithful in the region. The Diocese of Tursi-Lagonegro, located in Basilicata in southern Italy, encompasses communities in the provinces of Matera and Potenza.
