More than 130 civil society organizations spanning 56 countries have issued a call for urgent international action to defend the International Criminal Court amid escalating pressure on the institution, DAWN reported.
Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Venezuela and Chad have formally notified the United Nations of their intention to withdraw from the Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the Court. The United States has simultaneously intensified its campaign against the ICC through additional enforcement measures.
The coordinated statement underscores deepening alarm among international human rights advocates over threats to the Court's institutional independence. The withdrawals and U.S. actions represent a significant challenge to an institution designed to prosecute genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes when national courts prove unwilling or unable to act.
