The European Council called on Israel to stop settlement construction and warned companies against participating in development projects in the E1 area east of Jerusalem, Shehab Wire reported. The bloc reiterated its position that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory are illegal under international law.
The E1 zone has long been a flashpoint in Israeli-Palestinian disputes, with Israeli plans to build thousands of housing units there viewed by Palestinians and the international community as an obstacle to peace efforts and territorial contiguity of a future Palestinian state.
