Yair Lapid, leader of Israel's opposition, declared that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suffered a "crushing defeat" following Tuesday's election, according to Middle East Eye. Lapid's statement marked an immediate challenge to Netanyahu's grip on power as results from the vote began to crystallize.
The opposition leader's comment came as parties assessed the electoral outcome and began positioning for potential coalition negotiations in the hours after polling closed.
