Israel's political rivals have constructed barriers to prevent a Palestinian-backed coalition from unseating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, The Guardian reported. The maneuver allows the incumbent to potentially convert electoral defeat into another term despite unfavorable results. Hours before final election tallies were announced, the blocking strategy had already solidified among opposition parties unwilling to partner with Palestinian-backed groups.
The procedural obstruction represents a significant shift in Israeli coalition mathematics, forcing Netanyahu's path to continued power despite weakness at the ballot box. His rivals' decision to erect what the outlet characterized as a "confected barrier" has fundamentally altered the post-election negotiating landscape and his prospects for remaining prime minister.
