The European Union remains unable to mount a coordinated response to Israel's actions against Palestinians despite growing public anger across member states, The Guardian reported. Disagreements among bloc members along longstanding fault lines have left the EU sidelined from substantive debate on the issue, even as public pressure mounts for stronger positions on settlements and related conduct.
The bloc's inability to act has drawn criticism that the EU is rendering itself irrelevant in discussions shaping international response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Meanwhile, individual member states, including Britain, have moved independently to impose sanctions on trade with illegal Israeli settlements and to publicly use language such as "ethnic cleansing" in describing events on the ground.
