Democrat Adam Hamawy, a volunteer surgeon who treated Palestinians in Gaza during Israel's military operations, defeated Republican Gregg Mele to represent New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, Middle East Eye reported.
Hamawy's election adds a voice to Congress with direct experience of the conflict. His medical work in Gaza formed a key part of his campaign platform in the Democratic-leaning district.
