UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank endangers the two-state solution and increases risks of Palestinian displacement, Shehab Wire reported. He said plans to expand Area C threaten to sever the north of the West Bank from the south, fragmenting Palestinian territory.
The expansion would undermine the viability of establishing a Palestinian state, Guterres cautioned. The settlement activity poses a strategic danger to prospects for peace, he said, as the widening of settlements in Area C—territory under full Israeli control under the Oslo Accords—deepens territorial fragmentation that complicates any future Palestinian statehood arrangements.
