Israeli police detained Abed Abou Shhadeh, a former city council representative of the Palestinian community in Jaffa, without filing charges against him, Middle East Eye reported. Jaffa is a southern suburb of Tel Aviv where Shhadeh previously served in municipal government.
The detention marks another case of Palestinians held by Israeli authorities without formal charges, a practice rights groups have documented repeatedly in occupied Palestinian territories and within Israel proper.
