Israel's election authority is moving to disqualify both Ra'am and the Joint List, the two largest Arab political coalitions, from October parliamentary elections, Al Jazeera English reported. The bids to exclude the parties, submitted by right-wing lawmakers, cite alleged support for terrorism and opposition to Israel's existence as grounds for removal from the ballot.
The move would leave Palestinian citizens of Israel without significant Knesset representation, as the two lists account for the bulk of Arab electoral participation. Israel's Central Elections Committee must rule on the petitions before the election date.
