Israeli police solve one in eight killings in Arab towns

A thirty-one-year-old man was shot dead near Arraba, in the Lower Galilee, on Friday morning. Police called it a criminal incident. Haaretz, reporting the killing, put the number of Arab citizens killed in Israel since the start of the year at at least 158, inside a national homicide toll of 192.
Both figures are the ordinary arithmetic of a year in Palestinian towns inside Israel. What makes them a political fact rather than a crime statistic is the second number the community keeps citing back to the state: twelve.
What the watchdog counted#
The Abraham Initiatives, the Jewish-Arab organisation that has tracked the killings for years, published its half-year audit on 1 July. It counted 147 people killed in Arab communities in the first six months of 2026, a toll running about fifteen percent above the same period of 2025.
Police solved twelve percent of those cases. The rate the year before was ten percent.
Nearly forty percent of the killings were in the north. Lod, in the centre, had the highest count of any single town at nine victims.
The organisation's count for 2025 was 255 killed — the deadliest year on record for Palestinian citizens of Israel, and one the current pace is on course to pass.
The gap the community names#
Israeli police commanders do not dispute the scale. The Tel Aviv district commander, Haim Sargaroff, described the situation in the Times of Israel's account of the report as a state of national emergency and said the agencies needed to work together. Police officials pointed to prosecutors, to the courts, and to the technological capacity they say they lack for gathering evidence.
Community leaders and the Follow-Up Committee have made the opposite argument for a decade: that weapons circulate freely in towns where the same police force conducts frequent operations for other purposes, and that a solve rate near one in eight is not a resource problem but a statement of priority.
The comparison the community keeps drawing is with the clearance rate the same force achieves in the rest of the country, and with the speed at which it moves when the victim is Jewish.
Why it sits in the election#
Every Israeli bloc now carries a plan. The Democrats' leader Yair Golan published one this month; Ra'am has made policing and enforcement its central domestic demand in the coalition talks it is signalling it wants to rejoin.
None of that has yet changed the number the families read each week. The count since January stands at at least 158, and the year has four months left in it.
