Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, the South African jurist who led a United Nations commission of inquiry concluding that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, Democracy Now! reported has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Pillay's selection by the Norwegian Nobel Committee marks her recognition for documenting alleged Israeli conduct in the territory.
The award comes as Pillay has faced intense scrutiny from Israel and its allies over the commission's findings. Her Nobel selection reflects deep international divisions over accountability for actions in Gaza and the role of international legal mechanisms in investigating such claims.
