Palestinians commemorated the 109th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, the 1917 British pledge that paved the way for Jewish settlement in Palestine, the Ma'an news agency reported. The declaration has long been viewed by Palestinians as a foundational injustice that displaced them from their homeland and enabled decades of conflict.
The Balfour Declaration promised British support for a Jewish national home in Palestine while the territory remained under Ottoman control, without consultation of the Palestinian Arab majority living there. Palestinians consider the promise a primary historical grievance underlying their dispossession and ongoing statelessness.
