Israel issued a tender Tuesday for construction of 1,234 settlement units in the southern section of the E1 plan east of occupied Jerusalem, according to Middle East Eye. The move advances one of the most contested expansion projects in Israeli settlement policy, long viewed as a potential barrier to Palestinian territorial contiguity in the West Bank.
The E1 area has remained at the center of Israeli-Palestinian disputes over land use and settlement growth. The tender represents the first formal procurement step toward building in the zone, which sits between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea in territory Israel occupied in 1967.
